Is it bad to present an offering with a novena?

Is it bad to present an offering with a novena or would you just suggest lighting a candle? When is the best time to do your novena before or after the prayer of the rosary? When should I start my advent prayers? Where/when should I insert my monthly prayers such as the prayer of the rosary for the month of october? Is it required that I pray to all of my patron saints everyday?
