What do the terms "popular vote" and "electoral vote" mean?

Popular votes are the votes cast by the people. Electoral votes are votes cast by the states, which are usually determined by the popular vote in each state. The presidency is decided by electoral votes in order to keep big, populated states from acting as tyrants over smaller, less populated states.
