Electoral vs. popular vote?

what is the point of the popular vote if no matter what we go with the electoral vote? it doesnt make sense... even if popular vote goes for Obama, McCain will be our president if the electoral vote swings that way (or vice versa). Is our right to vote just a big slap in the face? What other purpose could it serve?
